RÉSUMÉ

Benthic diatom communities were collected from artificial substrates (glass slides), which were placed at seven sampling stations along the Pinang (Penang) River and its tributaries. Species diversity and other components of diatom diversity in samples at the seven stations were analysed. Species composition was highly variable along the river, and the highest diversity values were recorded at a relatively unpolluted station, followed by the stations at estuary which received saltwater incursion during high tide. Lowest species diversity and richness were recorded at stations polluted with urban sewage. Although the changes in species diversity cannot be used as an index of water quality, however the values can be related to changes in water quality.
