RÉSUMÉ

Sexual reproduction of Berkeleya micans (Lyngb.) Grun. (Syn.: Amphipleura micans (Lyngb.) Cl.) follows the pattern described in literature for Berkeleya rutilans (Trentep.) Grun. Both species are allogamous. Morphological and physiological isogamy peculiar to such representatives of pennate diatoms as Amphora ovalis (Kutz.) Kutz., Dickieia (=Navicula) ulvacea (Berk. ex Kutz.) Cleve, Navicula oblonga (Kutz.) Kutz., N. protracta (Grun.) Cleve, and Rhoicosphenia curvata (Kutz.) Grun. is observed in both cases. During the process of plasmogamy, the frustules of mother cells of Berkeleya micans are completely open. The epitheca and hypotheca are located at wide angles when observed transapically. Fusion of gametes and zygote formation occur within the space between the thecae of gametangia rather than inside them, as it is registered in Cymbella lanceolata (Ehr.) Ross, Neidium affine (Ehr.) Pfitz., Nitzschia recta Hantzsch, Placoneis gastrum (Ehr.) Mer., and also in Amphipleura pellucida (Kutz.) Kutz., in which physiological anisogamy is observed. Fundamental distinctions between the patterns and modes of sexual reproduction of A. pellucida and Berkeleya produce evidence in favor of differences in taxonomic positions of these taxa. At the same time, the divergence of sexual reproduction is registered neither in Berkeleya micans nor in B. rutilans.
