Motion in Water at Supercavitation Speeds

Yu. N. Savchenko
Institute of Hydromechanics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine

RÉSUMÉ

Advantages of craft motion at supercavitation speeds in water are demonstrated. Experimental studies of supercavities are presented for model craft launched from a gas catapult into a 35×2.2×2.2 m channel at speeds up to 1360 m/s (0.93 M) where they move with cavitation numbers σ = 10−4. The paradoxical properties of supercavitation flow modes are discussed. Results of a numerical modeling of the formation and perturbation of free boundaries of supercavities are presented.
