EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF n-BUTANOL−ETHANOL−DIESEL BLENDS IN A DIESEL ENGINE

RÉSUMÉ

This paper presents an analysis of the solubility and other properties of ethanol-diesel blends on addition of n-butanol in the range of 6% to 10% at three different temperatures 5°C, 15°C, and 25°C. Fifty blends of various proportions have been tested for solubility and other properties. The fuel blends have been tested as per ASTM standards for flash point, energy content, density, viscosity, cetane number, and latent heat of vaporization. The properties of the fuel blends have been compared with those of diesel, ethanol, and n-butanol. The addition of n-butanol to the blends increases the density, viscosity, cetane number, and the energy content. The increase in the ethanol content in the blends increases the oxygen content to a greater extent but there is a decrease in all other properties. This study indicates the possibility of using higher ethanol in ethanol-diesel blends for the temperature range from 5°C to 25°C and above in diesel engines, which reduces the consumption of fossil fuel.
