OPTIMIZATION METHODS IN MINIMIZATION OF EMISSIONS FROM COMBUSTION

RÉSUMÉ

The present paper shows three examples of a successful application of optimization in the field of combustion. In the first example, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based mathematical model was applied to study emission formation in a 40 MWth boiler burning biomass. There were nine design variables (nine distinct NH3 injections in the selective noncatalytic reduction process) and two conflicting objective functions (minimize NO and NH3 emission in flue gas). Two inherently different optimization algorithms, viz. a genetic algorithm and Powell's conjugate-direction method, were applied. As a result, several possible solutions to decrease NO and NH3 emissions were identified by approximating the Pareto optimal set. In the second example, a CFD-based model was applied to predict NO emission from a 5 MWth gas burner. The sizes of fuel (CH4) injection holes were varied. In the third example, a laboratory-scale experimental reactor was applied to study the effect of temperature, O2, NO, and NH3 on the formation of NO. The Taguchi method − a method based on design of experiments − was applied to select the parameters in the experimental runs.
