An experimental study of the effect of vortex breakdown using two coaxial jets was undertaken. The two jets were developed using a model atomizer consisting of three coaxial cones. Both qualitative and quantitative data were taken of the vortex breakdown structure. This was accomplished using vaporized paraffin to seed the inner jet and a laser light sheet to visualize the flow regime. Measurements of the axial and radial velocity components were obtained using laser Doppler velocimetry for a range of Reynolds numbers and swirl levels. A video analysis of the jet structure was also undertaken and correlated with these measured components.
