RÉSUMÉ

This paper presents a novel design and experimental study for a Loop Heat Pipe evaporator to be applied as an exhaust heat recovery system in automobiles. The application requires, next to the ability to transport up to several kilowatts of heat, a small size and minimum weight, a fast response and start-up, great reliability and no additional power supply. The presented Loop Heat Pipe evaporator design meets the named requirements. Fundamental experimental studies with several prototypes were carried out. Compensation chamber designs proved its functionality. Tests with a highly transient heat loads were conducted, as well as system start-up tests, and basic parameter changes. Due to the high temperature difference (up to 500K) between the heat source and sink, visualization of system and transport phenomena through thermal imaging and a gauge-glass in the compensation chamber could be applied. Nucleate boiling in the evaporator core, temperature oscillations and the distribution of non-condensable gases were visualized.
