RÉSUMÉ

The aim of this study is to develop a comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based model for predicting the effective permeability coefficient of porous media as compacted exfoliated clays (CECs). Indeed, compacted exfoliated clays represent an interesting alternative to asbestos or compacted exfoliated graphite for high-temperature and high-pressure sealing applications. The microstructure of the CEC samples was characterized by using a scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and the permeability was evaluated by applying, at direct pore level, a finite element simulation via ANSYS software. The permeability coefficients determined with the proposed approach are compared to the values predicted by some porous media flow models, namely, conduit flow, hydraulic radius theory, and drag models. Then the relation between the microstructure of the porous media and the effective permeability was established with two parametric analyses. The relationship obtained between the macroscopic permeability and porosity volume ratio was strongly nonlinear and anisotropic for the compacted clays studied. Furthermore, the influence of the porosity shape on the permeability is highlighted.
