ESTIMATION OF TORTUOSITY AND EFFECTIVE DIFFUSIVITY TENSORS USING CLOSURE FORMULATION IN A SINTERED POLYMER WICK DURING TRANSPORT OF A NONDILUTE, MULTICOMPONENT LIQUID MIXTURE
RÉSUMÉ
The closure problem for the calculation of spatial deviations in mole fractions during the transport of a nondilute, multicomponent liquid mixture in a porous medium is well developed. However, in almost all of the previous work on seeking closure, the random nature of a typical porous medium is overlooked, and only simple unit cells, with few solid objects of regular shapes in a cube or square, are considered. Unlike the previous work, a micrograph of the cross section of a porous wick made by sintering polymer beads is chosen for solving the closure problem. Unit cells of different sizes are considered at the center of the micrograph to study the closure problem in the void region of each unit cell. This problem is numerically solved using the COMSOL Multiphysics software package, and the effective diffusivity and tortuosity tensors, important for modeling the transport of species in a porous medium, are calculated. From the obtained tensors, the isotropic nature of the selected porous material is established. The value of tortuosity is also compared with the available theoretical and empirical correlations from the literature.
