Change of Limnocalanus macrurus (Copepoda, Calanoida) Population State under High Summer Temperature
RÉSUMÉ
The many-year data on state of population of the relict copepod Limnocalanus macrurus Sars, 1863 in the Sita Lake (Belarus) were analyzed. Numbers of the copepod sharply decreased after water temperature in the upper water layer exceeded 26°C. Analysis of the vertical distribution of Limnocalanus showed that it avoids water layers with the oxygen deficit and elevated temperature. Growth of the surface temperature and decrease of the oxygen content in the hypolimnion resulted in reducing of the spatial niche and drastic decrease of the Limnocalanus numbers, and thus increased risk of its extinction. Similar mechanism of the numbers decrease and further extinction of the relict planktonic crustaceans probably acts in other lakes with similar morphometric and trophic characteristics.
