TESTING OF METAL POWDERS BEHAVIOR IN A HOT STAGE MICROSCOPE

RÉSUMÉ

A microscopic investigation aimed at the ignition characteristics of different metallic powders (Ti, TiH2, B, and Al) as well as at the agglomeration phenomena of aluminum particles during gradual heating was carried out using an optical microscope with a controlled hot stage. Both inert (argon) and oxidative (air, oxygen) gaseous media were employed. All metallic particles under investigation, except aluminum, exhibited ignition in air at temperatures below 1200°C. Aluminum particles in prepressed samples revealed the formation of large liquid aluminum drops on the sample surface at temperatures slightly exceeding the aluminum melting point. It is postulated that this phenomenon simulates aluminum agglomeration during the combustion of aluminized solid propellants.
