THERMAL RADIATION FROM BURNING ALUMINUM AND OXIDE PARTICLES IN SOLID PROPELLANTS

RÉSUMÉ

Calibrated infrared emission measurements of burning aluminum droplets in AP/HTPB/Al composite propellants have been made. Emission by the molten metal surface, oxide cap, and oxide smoke-laden, diffusion flame envelope is resolved and quantified. Detailed analysis of thermal radiative transport in the burning aluminum droplet system has been conducted. The relative importance of emission by molten aluminum versus oxide cap versus oxide-smoke envelope is discussed.
