THE DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS' SENSE OF BELONGING IN THE MATHEMATICS COMMUNITY THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN COLLEGE OUTREACH
RÉSUMÉ
This study examined the sense of belonging in the mathematics community (SBMC) among twelfth grade students who belong to sections of the population that are underrepresented in mathematics, specifically low-income and first-generation-college students, and who participated in a college outreach program that targets students interested in college majors in mathematics and science. Results indicated that college outreach program participation had a positive impact on the participants' SBMC. Factors of the college outreach program contributing to participants' SBMC include being surrounded by other motivated peers, sharing a common program-wide goal, being able to receive help when needed, and working in a collaborative learning environment. Based on these results, it would seem that gaining a SBMC through participation in college outreach programs could help to encourage more underrepresented students to pursue mathematics-related careers.
