THE IRRECONCILABLE IMAGES OF WOMEN, SCIENCE, AND ENGINEERING: A MANITOBAN PROGRAM THAT IS SHATTERING THE STEREOTYPES
RÉSUMÉ
The images of technology and of women appear to be incompatible. Parents, teachers, school counselors, and peers contribute to and are influenced by these different images. Physical scientists or engineers are often described as solitary, cold, brilliant, self-assured, career-minded, reflecting the traditional ideas of qualities of successful career men. Women can be perceived by themselves and by society as being sociable, caring, submissive, quiet, creative, followers. The University of Manitoba's Access Program for Women in Science and Engineering and the PRIME Access Program change the stereotypical images of scientists and engineers for girls and women in Manitoba. Female science and engineering students visit urban and rural schools and women's organizations to discuss the excitement and relevance of careers in science and engineering, and in the process change these images.
