SINOPSIS

Behaviour of a discrete fin-and-tube evaporator during frost deposition was modelled with reasonable assumptions. The model accounted for the influence of frosting on thermal and aerodynamic characteristics and incorporated fan performance characteristic. Each row of tubes was considered to be a separate zone and it was divided into smaller zones; side zone including tube bends, central parts with fins, depending on fin pitch values. For each zone thermal and flow conditions were averaged. Air calculations were based on enthalpy balance. During the experimental verification 8 types of evaporators with plain fins and with delta wing vortex generators or dimples were investigated. Tests were carried out in wind tunnel and in real refrigerator-freezers of side-by-side (SBS) type under dry and severe frost conditions. It was found that evaporators with the innovative design showed higher performance than the ones with conventional designs after 9∼12 hours of operation under severe frosting conditions. Results of simulations were in good agreement with test data.
