SINOPSIS

An experimental study is conducted on natural convection heat transfer from square pin fin and plate fin heat sinks subject to the influence of orientation. Four pin fin and two plate fin heat sinks are tested under controlled environment in the present study. It is found that the downward facing orientation yields the lowest heat transfer coefficient. This is applicable for both plate fin and pin fin geometry. However, the heat transfer performance for upward facing and sideward facing orientations are of comparable magnitude. For the pin fin configuration, heat transfer performance for horizontal arrangement slightly exceeds that of sideward arrangement. By contrast, the plate fin configuration shows the opposite trend. The difference is related to the induced air flow pattern. With the same fin height of 10 mm and fin spacing of 2 mm, the pin fins outperform the plate fins on the overall heat transfer coefficient by about 0% ∼ 23% over the test range of 1.8×106 < Ra < 4.2×106. In addition, the advantage of the pin fins escalates with the increase of the Rayleigh number due to the more open ends for air ventilation. For the present pin fin heat sink with a fixed fin height of 10 mm, the heat transfer coefficient initially increases with the population density, attains a maximum around 1 pin/cm2, and then decreases thereafter.
