SINOPSIS

The UWHF heat transfer and the pressure drop characteristics of laminar and turbulent flow through rectangular and square ribbed ducts with twisted tape inserts have been studied experimentally. The characteristics are governed by tape and rib geometry, duct aspect ratio, Re and Pr. Regularly spaced twisted tape elements in specific cases perform only marginally (5−9% reduced pumping power, PP for constant heat duty, HD) and significantly (4−25% increased HD for constant PP and 14−56% reduced PP for constant HD) better than their full-length counterparts in case of laminar and turbulent flow, respectively; whereas the short-length twisted-tape performs worse than the full-length twisted tapes for both laminar and turbulent flow. In all cases, the present duct geometry performs better than the plain ducts, ducts with only twisted tapes and with only ribs.
