SINOPSIS

In this present experimental investigation, heat transfer and pressure drop characteristic of double pipe heat exchanger (DPHE) with corrugated outer tube is studied for the annulus flow with air as working fluid for the counter flow conditions. The tests were performed for three different pitches (1 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm), two different diameter ratio (DR = 0.53, 0.40) and Reynolds number varies between 3000 - 12860 to analyze the effect of corrugated outer tube. Results for the corrugated tube DPHE are normalized with smooth tube double pipe heat exchanger and have been shown in the term of Nusselt number ratio and friction factor ratio. The DPHE with P=1, DR=0.4 exhibits higher Nusselt number ratio compared to the DPHE with P=1 and DR = 0.53. While DPHE with P=3, DR=0.4 exhibits higher friction factor ratio compared to the DPHE with P=1 and DR = 0.53. The Thermal performance factor for each configuration was found to be greater than unity for the test range of Reynolds number. Correlations have been developed in order to obtain the enhancement in Nusselt number and friction factor for the test range of Reynolds number of corrugated tube heat exchanger.
