SINOPSIS

The advent of fast numerical solutions to the N-body problem such as the Fast Multipole Method has opened up the possibility of vortex method simulations of fluid flow using millions of vortex elements. This resolution is sufficient to make credible large eddy simulations of turbulent flow via vortex methods. Here, a particular hybrid formulation of such a scheme is described that uses freely convecting vortex tube elements together with a thin, fine grid of triangular prisms adjacent to solid surfaces. The latter provide an efficient and accurate representation of the critical vortex generation process that plays a large part in the dynamics of turbulent flow. Some examples of the application of the methodology to boundary layer and bluff body flows is given.
