SINOPSIS

In this paper optical data is presented for the internal flow structure of real size injectors at pressures up to 2050 bar. A study of swirl atomisers is presented where the inlet chamfer angle is varied. Data is presented that quantifies the flow structures that lead to the formation of swirl air-cores, and images of string cavitation at an injection pressure of 2050 bar are presented. Fluorescent PIV data of the axial and tangential velocity components of the internal flow field, provide a quantitative analysis of the observed phenomenon, together with high speed flow visualisation of the flow structure development within the nozzle of the injector.
