Numerical study of laminar jet interacting with turbulent cross-flow
SINOPSIS
Numerical study has been carried out to investigate a square laminar jet interacting with a fully-developed turbulent cross-flow. A direct numerical simulation code SBLI was used and the simulation Reynolds number is 1000, based on the free-stream quantities and the jet exit width. A precursor turbulent boundary layer simulation was performed at first to generate quality inflow condition, followed by the main jet in cross-flow computation. The jet to cross-flow velocity ratios of 0.5 and 1.5 are considered and the statistics results are compared with the available experimental data. It was found that while at high velocity ratio of 1.5, simulation result has shown good agreement with the test data, it under-predicts at low velocity ratio of 0.5. The discrepancy is probably due to the Reynolds number effect, for which a factor of 4.7 exists between the simulations and the experiments. Further researches at higher Reynolds number are desirable.
