SINOPSIS

Simultaneous measurements of heat transfer and phase distribution were carried out in a n-heptane/water mixture flowing in a vertical, a horizontal and a bended stainless steel tube of 16 mm inner diameter. The phase distribution was measured by a very high frequency impedance probe with a tip diameter of 0.58 mm. The volumetric phase fraction of n-heptane was varied from 0 to 1, the mixture velocities from 0.5 to 2.3 m/s, and the temperature from 30 to 80°C. Heat transfer depends on the phase distribution in the boundary layer at the heated wall. A probe, flush-mounted at the wall, indicates that only one component is in contact with the wall. The change from one component to the other is rather abrupt and is most likely due to a phase inversion of the system. In horizontal tubes and bends this effect is superimposed by the influence of gravity and centrifugal forces. Simple prediction methods for heat transfer are proposed for the tested tube configurations.
