SINOPSIS
A modulated porous layer coating is effective in enhancing nucleate boiling. A modulated porous layer coating, which is defined as periodically non-uniform thickness, was made from 200 μm and 50 μm copper particles sintered to form cons with 1 mm height at 1 mm distances of 0.5 mm. With respect to plain copper surface, the critical heat flux at saturated pool boiling in FC-72 with the use of modulated porous layer coatings at cluster cone height of 0.5 mm was greater by a factor of 1.3, and at a height of 1 mm it was greater by a factor of 2.3.
