Multifractal subgrid-scale modeling for large eddy simulation of turbulent flows

Multifractal subgrid-scale modeling has been used to simulate turbulent mixing in a confined jet at high Schmidt and Reynolds number. In the multifractal formalism the nonlinear convection is directly calculated using resolved and subgrid-scale velocities. The subgrid-scale velocity is determined by the subgrid-scale vorticity reconstructed using stochastic cascades with scale-invariant multiplier distributions. The multifractal model is extended to scalar dynamics by applying the multifractal formulation analogously to the subgrid-scale dissipation field. Subsequently, a comparative study using traditional subgrid-scale modeling has been done to validate the multifractal model. Results obtained from the multifractal model for the confined jet case are in good agreement with reference data. However, differences to numerical results obtained from common subgrid-scale models are relatively small.
