Effect of high Reynolds number ratio on transition of transient channel flow
SINOPSIS
Large Eddy Simulations of rapidly accelerating channel flows with Reynolds number ratio up to 19 have been performed. It is shown that the response of accelerating flow cases is essentially the same as that described in He & Seddighi (2013) - a three-stage development resembling the bypass transition of boundary layer flows. There are, however, some quantitative differences in the flow structures and the onset of transition in the present cases. It is shown that the critical Reynolds number and transitional period in low turbulence intensity cases begin to diverge from the trends of He & Seddighi (2015). It is shown that there are large deviations in the critical Reynolds number for multiple realizations of the present flow cases. These deviations are shown to be linearly proportional to the mean. The length of the flow domain is also shown to affect the critical Reynolds number.
