SINOPSIS

Computerized models of physical processes in a displacement compressor have been used successfully for optimization of design parameters and operating conditions. It is argued that such models - with adequate modifications - can be employed for generating a data-base for a subsequent design of expert system, but also for a model-based expert software which could be integrated in an on-line system for the control and supervision of compressor plant operation. For a real-time simulation the model should be simple enough to respond fast and generate the required information, but also it should have a sound physical basis and be sufficiently general to enable a reliable computation of task parameters over a wide range of operating conditions. The paper illustrates the performances of a mathematical model of a real thermodynamic cycle in a screw compressor and its utilization to the predictions of compressor characteristics at varying operating conditions. The model includes several phenomena relevant for the supervision of compressor operation such as the influence of oil injection, dimension of clearance, rotation speed.
