SINOPSIS

A numerical study is initiated to investigate the feasibility of determining cerebral blood oxygen saturation (StO) noninvasively using optical reflectance ratio of dual-wavelength measurements. The light signals are measured on the neck skin surface above the common carotid artery (CCA) and jugular vein (JV), respectively, such that the StO states for both the CCA and JV can be evaluated. A Monte Carlo approach was employed to simulate the light reflectance measurement experiments in a neck tissue model with a submerged CCA/JV blood vessel. Emphasis was placed on investigating the reflectance ratio behavior with respect to the location, size, and hemoglobin concentration of the CCA or JV. The results revealed quantifiable logarithmic relationships between each of the above-mentioned parameters and the StO of the blood vessel. Correlations relating the cerebral blood StO to the reflectance ratio were developed.
