SINOPSIS

The lattice Boltzmann method was used, for the first time, to solve the energy equation of a problem involving radiation. The radiative information required in the energy equation was computed from the collapsed dimension method. To test the suitability of the lattice Boltzmann method for a new class of problems, transient conduction and radiation heat transfer in a 2-D rectangular enclosure with absorbing, emitting and scattering media was considered. Effects of the conduction-radiation parameter and the scattering albedo on temperature were investigated. The results were compared by solving the energy equation by the finite volume method in which also the collapsed dimension method was used to compute the radiative information. The lattice Boltzmann method was found to provide accurate results. Further, the lattice Boltzmann method was also found faster than the finite volume method.
