Multistream Heat Exchangers Types, Capabilities and Limits of Design
SINOPSIS
Multistream heat exchangers are a first choice nowadays for the effective use of thermodynamic potentials within complex process plants. Common applications are clean fluids at low and very low temperature. Usual types of apparatuses up to now are tubular exchangers with helically coiled tube-bundles and brazed aluminium plate-fin heat exchangers. Linde is a manufacturer of both types of exchangers.
In the first part of the paper, the specific geometry and the manufacturing process of both types of exchangers is laid out briefly.
The second part is concerned with the thermodynamic behaviour of the heat exchangers and its consequences for plant design. This involves also a brief discussion of state of the art computer programs.
Finally, the capabilities of both types regarding heat transfer and pressure drop are evaluated and the range of application is discussed.
