Nitrocellulose with 13.47% nitrogen content was treated with ultrasonic waves for 5−60 min in water or in an ether-alcohol solution. The effects of the ultrasonic treatment on macromolecular structure and solubility of the nitrocellulose were studied. The results indicated that the solubility of the nitrocellulose could be notably improved without visibly altering the structure. The solubility of the original nitrocellulose was 6.51%. When treated in water, the solubility of the nitrocellulose could only be increased to 6.86%. However, when treated in an ether-alcohol solution, the solubility could be increased to 11.48%. In addition, a mechanism for the solubility changes during the ultrasonic treatment is proposed.
