Spatial and Temporal Variability of Carbon to Chlorophyll a Ratio in Phytoplankton of the Surface Layer in Shallow Water Areas of the Black Sea (Crimea)
SINOPSIS
Spatial and temporal variability of C/chl. a ratio in phytoplankton of the surface layer (0−1 m) was revealed in the period from September 2005 to May 2013 in the shallow areas of the Black Sea. The minimum values of the ratio (30−72) were recorded for the coastal strip. The maximum values (240−330) were taken from the areas farthest from the shore. It was shown that 65% to 78% of the variability of the C/chl. a ratio causes differences in light conditions in the upper quasi-homogeneous layer, and the heterogenity of taxonomic and dimensional structure of phytoplankton. The results indicate the need to take into account the variability of the C/chl. a ratio calculating phytoplankton biomass by chl. a concentration.
