SINOPSIS

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common disorders involving the knee. Despite its high incidence, the pathophysiology remains poorly understood. One of the main tenants of conservative treatment has been the strengthening of vastus medialis oblique (VMO), because of this muscles proposed role in the dynamic control of the patella. The purpose of this article is to examine the role of VMO in PFPS. From the available literature it would appear that insufficiency of the VMO is only implicated in the etiology of PFPS, when the level of its dysfunction is related to that of overall quadriceps inhibition and atrophy. In light of this evidence, a rationale for exercise rehabilitation of the dynamic stabilizers of the patella is proposed.
