SINOPSIS
This paper covers theoretical and experimental studies of internal mixing and related mechanisms that form a thin structure and microstructure in a stably stratified medium. A hydrodynamic instability of internal waves and flows that can lead to mixed regions (patches) is considered. The characteristics of the main types of motion (modes) of collapsing turbulence are studied. Special attention is drawn to the intrusion mode. A relation between restratification processes and those of molecular transport of momentum and material is analyzed.
