A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF A DIESEL SPRAY INTERACTING WITH A CROSS FLOW

SINOPSIS

The study of the interaction of a diesel spray with a cross flow is a way of gaining an insight into the phenomenon taking place in the combustion chamber of a high-speed direct injection diesel engine, where the in-cylinder air has a strong swirl movement. In this study, a suitable facility has been constructed to reproduce this phenomenon, and appropriate experimental techniques and data processing tools have been designed so as to be able to extract valuable information. Some preliminary results concerning atomization, spray geometry, and mixing are presented. One of the main findings in this study is that for a given nozzle geometry, the spray cone angle does play an important role in the phenomenon, whereas it is not relevant in the case of a gas jet interacting with a cross flow because the jet cone angle is nearly nondependent on the cross-flow density.
