INFLUENCE OF TITANIUM-COATED (B4C + SiC) PARTICLES ON ELECTRIC DISCHARGE MACHINING OF AA7050 HYBRID COMPOSITES
SINOPSIS
Aluminum alloy AA7050 reinforced with titanium-coated boron carbide and silicon carbide particles is produced by stir casting. The micrograph reveals uniform distribution of coated reinforcements in aluminum composites. Eight types of composites are produced by varying percentage reinforcement. The influence of reinforcing particles present in composites on electric discharge machining has been analyzed. The material removal rate and tool wear ratio decrease with increasing percentage reinforcement. The composite exhibits better surface finish due to heat dissipation. The surface texture of composites shows lesser white spots compared to unreinforced aluminum alloy. An increase in the spark gap due to the addition of strengthening particles is evident. At higher magnification surface cracks, microvoids, and recasted layers are visible.
