SINOPSIS

The microbial community isolated from the stomach of Epischura baicalensis was studied using the method of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Archaea were found under the ice in the water column at the deep water station of the Southern Baikal using the ARCH915a probe. A high concentration of zooplankton with a predominance of Epischura baicalensis (80−90%) was registered in the upper layer of water during this period. The increase in the concentration of methane during the period of mass development of Epischura baicalensis suggests that the Baikal Archaea can be symbiotic organisms of this animal, and also producers of methane into the water column.
