Use of Invertebrates in Monitoring of Aquatic Ecosystems Contaminated with Heavy Metals (A Review)

N. V. Bren'
Institute of Hydrobiology, National Academy of Science of Ukraine, Kiev, Ukraine

SINOPSIS

The article provides a review of literature data on the occurrence and circulation of heavy metals (HM) in aquatic ecosystems, and abiotic and biotic factors influencing HM content in invertebrates. The diversity of responses in various species to action of some HM, especially in high concentrations, is of interest as a possibility to use such organisms in bioindication of water toxicity.
