SINOPSIS

In this article we present the solution of three-dimensional diffusion problems in prisms by using a hybrid numerical-analytical method. The proposed hybrid approach involves the integral transformation of the original problem along the longitudinal direction and the numerical solution of the resultant infinite system of partial differential equations. Results are presented and compared to a pure numerical (finite differences) solution approach for a cube involving constant physical properties and nonhomogeneous boundary conditions of the first, second, and third kinds and for the following cases of interest: (1) evaluation of the temperature field in the region at a prescribed time; (2) evaluation of the transient temperature field in the region during a time interval; and (3) evaluation of the transient temperature variation for a single point in the region during a time interval.
