Size Effect of the Reference and Current Images upon Operation of Maximum-Correlation Air Navigation Systems
SINOPSIS
Among the ways to improve the accuracy of independent air navigation systems one is employment, along with the basic inertial navigation system, of auxiliary radio (radar or radiometer based) or optical maximum-correlation, terrain-aided navigation systems. This allows minimizing the errors in aircraft coordinates as determined by the inertial system [1]. The operation principle of the maximum-correlation navigation systems consists in the following. The system sensor surveys the underlying surface at a given point of the route, while the receive facility forms a current image of the observed landmarks. The navigation computer compares the current image with the reference one stored in the computer memory. As a result of the comparison according to the maximum cross-correlation criterion, the computer estimates the aircraft to landmark conjunction errors in range and lateral deviation.
