MECHANISMS OF GENERATING INFRASOUND OSCILLATIONS IN THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE BY PERIODIC POWERFUL RADIO EMISSIONS

SINOPSIS

Results are presented of a comparative analysis of possible mechanisms of generating infrasound oscillations in the ionosphere at heights 100 to 350 km by the powerful periodic radio emission from a ground-based HF heater. The most efficient mechanism is shown to be the modulation of ionospheric currents in the region of the hybrid resonance (UHR) which results in modulation of the ponderomotive force and finally in modulation of the atmospheric gas pressure in the height range 250 to 350 km. With the effective power of the heater 100 MW the relative amplitude of infrasound oscillations in the vicinity of the UHR height ranges from 1% during the daytime to 10% at night. The theoretical estimates are in good agreement with the results of our observations made with the use of a Doppler radar at distance about 1000 km from the heater.
