SINOPSIS

The coverage range of shipborne navigational radars in various areas of the World Ocean is determined in large part by the radio wave propagation conditions in these regions. For this reason of special value are the experimental data which can contribute to improvement of the techniques for monitoring and prediction of the radio wave propagation factor. The paper presents some results of experimental investigations of range dependences of the radio wave propagation factor and coverage range of shipborne navigational radars in the northwestern area of the Pacific Ocean. The field reduction for the direct and reflected signals was determined simultaneously with weather monitoring and studying the conditions of formation of surface ducts and inverse layers. Range dependences of the radio wave propagation factor, probability distribution functions for the evaporation duct heights and coverage ranges of shipborne navigational radars have been obtained. The results of the study promote better understanding of the processes in the lower atmospheric layers over the ocean surface which determine the radio wave propagation conditions and coverage range of shipborne navigational radars in various regions of the World Ocean.
