ABSTRAKT

Counter current buoyancy driven flow (CCBDF) is a flow in which two streams flow in opposite direction due to density difference between two fluids. To understand the nature of counter current flow and local perturbation at interface of two counter streams, experimental and numerical studies were carried out. Experiments were performed in a transparent tilted pipe of internal diameter of 40.9mm and length of 1500mm and having constant temperature source tanks at both ends. A ball valve located in mid of transparent pipe to make two symmetric sections in test setup and separate hot and cold fluids initially. Outer cross section of transparent acrylic pipe is square in shape to eliminate distortion during flow visualization. Studies are carried out by temperature measurement in the test section at various locations. Flow visualization is performed using solution of potassium permanganate as dye. Experiments have been conducted for different inclination of pipe and temperature of hot fluid in the bottom side tank of test setup. CFD simulations are performed using OpenFOAM computer code. Results obtained in CFD analysis are compared with experimental data. This paper gives the details of experimental setup, experimental techniques used and CFD analysis performed. Comparison of CFD predictions with experimental data has also been presented.
