ABSTRAKT

Numerical simulations are carried out to analyze the flow and heat transfer characteristics around a semicircular cylinder under the effect of uniform shear flow near a wall at Reynolds number (Re) 100 (based on the diameter of the cylinder, D) and Prandtl number (Pr) 0.71. The bluff body is placed (i.e., curved surface facing inlet) in the vicinity of a plane wall, and cylinder-to-wall gap ratios (G/D) 0.1 to 0.5. In order to obtain uniform shear effects, the cylinder is immersed inside a viscous layer on the plane wall. The governing equations are discretized through the finite volume method on a staggered grid system. SIMPLE algorithm is used to compute the discretized equations iteratively. The heat transfer characteristics are presented in terms of isotherms patterns, mean Nusselt number (NuM), and ratio of total heat transfer rate under shear flow corresponds to uniform flow (Qshear flow/Quniform flow). Hydrodynamic behaviors are analyzed through streamlines, time-averaged lift (CL) and drag (CD) coefficients variation, and compared with the unconfined cylinder case where the wall effects are negligible. Results show that NuM, CD, and Qshear flow/Quniform flow decrease with the decrement in G/D, other than CL. Trends of the present results are comparable with that available of the literature, and fair agreement is found.
