ABSTRAKT

Two recent findings in relation with turbulent combustion modeling are discussed. The first concerns the projection, in a space of low-dimension, of the numerous degrees of freedom pertaining to the description of chemistry of hydrocarbon flames. From an analysis of chemical trajectories observed in canonical flame problems, a set of inequalities is derived and solved to determine the optimal composition-space projection. The second point deals with ignition after rapid compression, the major ignition regimes usually observed (quasi-homogeneous or fragmented) are revisited from Direct Numerical Simulation of a rapid compression machine. The outcome is an ignition diagram to delineate between regimes, this diagram is based on mixing characteristic times and the chemical ignition delay.
