ABSTRAKT

The purpose of this investigation is to determine if distorting the shape of a cuboid, could affect reattachment lengths due to the promotion of greater instability to the streamwise flow. Electronic components on a printed circuit board are often represented by simple cubes in experimental investigations of heat transfer and fluid dynamics, in this investigation the effect distortion is considered using computational fluid dynamics. However electronic components come in many shapes and forms, thus it is important to understand how shape may influence parameters such as reattachment as this could potentially affect cooling of components immediately downstream the component under consideration.
The investigation considered three un-distorted cuboids and four different distorted cuboid topologies subjected to streamwise flow in the Reynolds number range 17×103 < ReD < 67×103. The undistorted cuboids investigated had a width to height ratio of W/H = 3, 3.5 and 4. The distorted cuboid topologies considered were, parallelogram, isosceles trapezium, inverted parallelogram and inverted isosceles trapezium. The dimensions were selected to ensure that the various obstacles provided similar obstruction to the streamwise flow with respect to obstacle height and depth.
It has been observed that the reattachment length for distorted cuboids (within the range of distortion studied) has a strong relationship with the obstacle’s shadow width and it is postulated that this is due to the promotion of greater momentum transfer downstream of the obstacle.
