ABSTRAKT

Free stream flow and forced convection heat transfer across a circular cylinder rotating with a constant angular velocity are investigated numerically for both steady and unsteady periodic laminar flow in the two dimensional laminar flow regimes for Reynolds numbers of 20 to 160 and a Prandtl number of 0.7. Non dimensional rotation rate α which is the circumferential speed at the cylinder surface normalized by the free-stream velocity is varied from 0 to 6 for the cylinder dissipating Uniform Heat Flux (UHF). The objective of present work is a detailed investigation of flow and heat transfer characteristics of rotating circular cylinder for varying range of governing parameters. Semi-explicit finite volume method code implemented on a Cartesian grid system with multi-block structured grid is used. Conservative and consistent implementation of QUICK (Quadratic Upwind Interpolation for Convective Kinematics) convection scheme is done. For the Reynolds numbers in the unsteady flow regime, suppression of vortex shedding at certain rotation rate (αI < α < αII) and reappearance of vortex shedding for a narrow range of higher rotation rate (αIIααIII), as found earlier, is reported here for a wider range of Reynolds number and rotation rates. A heat transfer visualisation technique using heatlines is implemented here, probably for the first time, in finite volume framework for the unsteady heat transfer problem in complex domain. Due to rotation, Nusselt number reduction increases with increasing Re and increasing rotation rate.
