Investigation of Vortex and Swirl Reduction by Floor Splitter in a Single Pump Intake
ABSTRAKT
This study discusses the effect of cross sectional shape of floor splitter on its effectiveness in reducing vortices and swirls in the vicinity of pump inlet during intake. Four specimens with different cross sections were tested in a single intake pump sump model using computational fluid dynamics simulations. The floor splitter specimens were evaluated by measuring swirl angle in the inlet pipe as the pumping process took place for each splitter. Results showed that the floor splitter has effectively reduced the vortices and swirls that existed before its installation. This article also details the preliminary works to be carried out using particle image velocimetry (PIV) approach.
