Suppression of transition from deflagration to detonation: a possible application to explosion in coal mines

Abstrakt

It is of great interest for the engineering community to design and understand effective mechanisms that suppress the propagation of reactive front in industrial and mining environments. Recent experimental studies indicate that suppression of transition of deflagration to detonation is possible by incorporating a low pressure chamber adjacent to the propagation tunnel. In the present study computational fluid dynamic simulations are used to evaluate the influence of such a low pressure chamber on the propagation of H2-Air deflagration and detonation waves. Base conditions are obtained by simulating transition from deflagration to detonation in rectangular ducts without the presence of a vacuum chamber. Then, the suppression characteristics of the low pressure region are evaluated by incorporating a vacuum chamber. It is demonstrated that transition to detonation can be suppressed with a vacuum chamber, however, optimum location and size of this chamber needs further study.
