Effects of the plate material characteristics and its inclination angle on falling film breakup

ABSTRAKT

Breakup of the isothermal, distilled water falling film on a vertical plate is examined experimentally for three regimes: wetting of initially dry plate, plate rewetting and breakup of thin liquid film. Sandblasted copper, stainless steel, aluminum and galvanized metal sheet are used as plate material. Breakup on the inclined plate is performed on stainless steel with inclination angle 45°, 60° and 90°. A minimum liquid-flow rate, minimum film thickness and corresponding contact angle are measured. Dimensionless liquid-flow rate and dimensionless film thickness are presented as a function of the following contact angles: advancing contact angle for wetting of an initially dry plate, receding contact angle for liquid film breakup and an equilibrium contact angle for rewetting. The Reynolds number is fitted as a function of the Weber number for the three regimes. Minimum liquid-flow rate and film thickness in terms of the plate inclination angles are compared with published data.
