Optimization of conditions for cultivation of the Black Sea red alga Gelidium latifolium (Grev.) Born. et Thur. (Rhodophyta)

The results of experiments on intensive cultivation of the Black Sea red alga, Gelidium latifolium (Grev.) Born. et Thur. (Rhodophyta), performed by two techniques for suppression of epiphytes (pulse nutrition and dewatering) and also of nutrient media on water with salinity of 9; 18; 26, and 34°/oo are generalized. The combination of pulse nutrition (for 2 hours once in two days at the concentration of nitrogen (CN) 1500 μM and phosphorus (CP) 120 μM) and preliminary dewatering for 30 min proved to be the most effective. A temperature rise in spring within the supposed optimum of its values (from 15 to 20−25 °C) exerted a slight action on the average specific daily rate of biomass growth rate (μ). An increase in the concentration of biogenes (N/P) from 260/20 to 364/26 μM and illumination from 55 to 70 W/m2 causes an increase in μ by 20−30%. Depending on conditions of the preliminary maintenance of algae the value of μ may be 1.5−2 times as high that predetermines cyclicity of cultivation alternating with the rest phases. It has been established that at 34°/oo salinity the value of μ is 1.5−2.7 times more than at 9°/oo salinity and 1.3−1.4 more than at normal Black Sea salinity, the biomass of epiphytes decreasing by 6−8 times.
